radical gratitude spell

a spell to cast upon meeting a stranger, comrade or friend working for social and/or environmental justice and liberation:

you are a miracle walking
i greet you with wonder
in a world which seeks to own
your joy and your imagination
you have chosen to be free,
every day, as a practice.
i can never know
the struggles you went through to get here,
but i know you have swum upstream
and at times it has been lonely

i want you to know
i honor the choices you made in solitude
and i honor the work you have done to belong
i honor your commitment to that which is larger than yourself
and your journey
to love the particular container of life
that is you

you are enough
your work is enough
you are needed
your work is sacred
you are here
and i am grateful

  1. This really saved me from some bitter tears tonight. I couldn’t find my gratitude in a depression spiral but here it is. You are here and I am grateful. Thank you for channeling and guiding always.

  2. Thank you. I found you tonight by way of Brenda Salgado’s Awakin.org interview. This touched my heart deeply. I shared it with my tribe on KindSpring.org and on my blog. This means so much to me. Thank you. ?.

  3. Thank you! I just started the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program at CU Denver, after studying Feminist and Gender Studies and Political Science at Colorado College for undergrad. I found Pleasure Activism on my nightstand in a friend’s rental room where I stay (commuting to Denver from Colorado Springs) for school each week. The first segment of our history and theory class started with discussion norms after reading “Brave Spaces” and is leading into Stories of Self to get grounded. I shared this Radical Spell in my first assigned discussion post because it hits the nail so precisely at the heart of it. (Looking forward to the rest of the book as a queer burlesque performer etc.) Blessings. Gratitude. #telegraphs #mtheory2q19.

  4. Two days ago, during a work conference facilitators from Race Forward closed a session with your poem. I cried. I felt seen. I felt understood. Thank you for knowing and for letting us know that you know. This is truly a spell as it encapsulates my weird, magical journey and helps me feel that it is okay and it all makes sense and it is important. Thank you.

  5. I was introduced to this poem a few weeks ago. I have it bookmarked now and return to it often. Thank you!

  6. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the
structure of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content
so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for
only having one or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space it
    out better?

  7. absolutely beautiful, powerful and amazing. Thank you for sharing all you share. Your words carry much power.

  8. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem. Just picked up Pleasure Activism ?

  9. Thank you. My amazing colleague Araceli Hernandez dedicated your poem to our Nature for All Leadership Academy graduates (Stewards). I had to read it and it feels perfect. I plan to read it out loud this Saturday at our National Public Lands Day event for our volunteers. We have a morning of hard work ahead to green up a very grey stretch, so thank you. Uplifting and inspiring words!

  10. I’ve been grateful for this spell for a long time; it’s perched on my spirit and sings in my ear frequently. ? I’m trying to figure out how to ask your formal permission to weave these words (with attribution!) into a worship service I’m coordinating for the Unitarian Universalist Association. (If you *think* you know how deeply loved & respected you are by UUs, raise that to the Nth power: we invoke you & your work constantly!) My request doesn’t feel like a “booking” nor is it an unpaid “appearance,” so please point me to the most appropriate & respectful path of seeking permission and, if you wish, compensation for including this beautiful work in a (nonprofit) love-centered, spirit-filling, prophetic setting. ? Thank you.

  11. This has meant so much to me, and I’ve returned to its beauty over and over. I’d love to center this wisdom, with attribution, on a platform that I’m responsible for, and so I’m seeking a way to ask your permission to use it — have it spoken out loud — in a nonprofit, justice-centered video program.

Thank you for your gifts, amb! Thank you for all of the energy you put into building up the beloved community.

  12. I heard this poem for the first time as it was shared by a presenter at an HIV conference in 2019. It is the most beautiful thing; it makes me feel so seen. I keep coming back to it and here I am again in fall 2022. Thank you for sharing your magic with us.

  13. Hello there!

I’m a project coordinator working on an adolescent dating violence prevention initiative focused on caregiver engagment. I came across your lovely poem, and I’m wondering if you would be open to allowing my team to use this resource in our training sessions.

We will be using this for educational and non-commercial purposes. We would of course credit this work in the way that you wish to be credited. Is there an email I can reach you at to formally seek permission to use this resource?

    Thank you
